WHO IS RASHAAD BOYCE-CARLTON?
Rashaad La'Tjuán Boyce-Carlton, also known as Rashaad Carlton, is an esteemed recording and performing artist, songwriter, model, actor, and motivational speaker. He is most notably acclaimed for his debut single, "If You Leave."
EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Rashaad is the son of Charnic Terrell and drummer/songwriter, Dannie Junior Boyce. He is of West/Central Afrikan (paternal) and East Afrikan (maternal) ancestry. During early childhood Rashaad was adopted by his parents Willie and Lucille Carlton (née Brown), a local gospel singer. His grandmother, Christine Smith, initially inspired him to sing in church. Rashaad performed his first solo at the age of six and achieved professional recording at the age of twelve with the track "I Love The Lord."
Rashaad completed his education at John R. Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio, where he frequently showcased his talents in school talent shows and co-directed the school's renowned gospel choir, initially known as The Buchtel Gospel Choir and later as the Ben Drone Chorale ("BDC").
MUSICAL CAREER
Following his graduation, Rashaad began writing and recording multiple songs as a solo artist, and collaborated with the Hip-Hop/R&B group "AK's Finest: 6ix Fyggaz" from Akron, Ohio. He contributed to two gospel albums, providing lead vocals on "So Good To Me," featured on the album "Worthy" by BDC, and co-writing "Hold On To Your Faith" for the self-titled album of Minister Darrell Williams & Anointed Praise.
In 2004, Rashaad relocated to California to pursue a spiritual calling and advance his musical career. He quickly established himself as one of the premier vocal talents in Sacramento, earning the recognition of both fans and peers as a consummate performer.
In 2012, he received nominations for three awards at the Sounds Of Soul Music Awards, including Best R&B Artist, Best Urban Soul Artist, and the Rising Star “Verge” Award, ultimately winning the Best Urban Soul Artist accolade. In 2015, Rashaad was again nominated and secured the title of "Best Male Artist of the Year" at the Taste of Soul Music Awards.
Rashaad has cultivated a global following, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. His live performances, characterized by soulful expression, have earned him the honorary title of “Prince of Soul” among his admirers.
During the summer of 2013, Rashaad was one of the founding members of a supergroup named ‘Abbey Road,’ which included renowned platinum recording artists Ricky Bell (of New Edition and Bel Biv DeVoe), Dalvin DeGrate (of Jodeci), and Shazam Conner (of H-Town); this group has since disbanded.
In 2016, Rashaad recorded a song composed by the legendary Quincy Jones and produced by veteran producer Derek 'DOA' Allen, titled "I Thank Heaven," for the tribute album "LEGACY" dedicated to Robert Brookins.
In January 2017, four years after his debut release, Rashaad unveiled a new single entitled “Just Stay With Me” under his record label, ShaadieBoy Entertainment.
In December 2018, Rashaad collaborated with Zak Edwards of One Evolution Entertainment to lead and co-lead two tribute shows honoring iconic artists, Prince and Michael Jackson. These performances were titled "When Doves Cry - The Prince Tribute" and "Rock With You - The Michael Jackson Experience," respectively.
Rashaad has achieved recognition as one of Northern California's top-selling independent artists, with two singles, "If You Leave" and "Just Stay With Me," making the Dimple Records 'Top Sellers' list. He cites Marvin Gaye, Rachelle Ferrell, Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross, and Whitney Houston as a few of his primary musical influences.
